Dressing for your body shape

How many times have you tried out that dress that looked gorgeous in the store window, but feel that it looks terrible on you? Does this sound relatable? Well, it doesn’t imply that there is something wrong with your body. You are simply not dressing according to your body shape.

Fashion and trends change every day, and it’s not always easy to know how to adapt them for your unique and beautiful body shape. I believe that fashion is about feeling great in the looks we love and feeling great in who we are.

But first things first, do you know your body shape? Worry not. In the section below I am going to give you an idea about different body shapes and the tips on how to dress according to your shape.

An apple-shaped body

If you have this body shape, you are generally well-proportioned, have broader shoulders than your hips with no curvy hips and you don’t have a well-defined waistline.

Listed below is what you ought to wear to match this body type:

Instead of wearing a belt around the waist, wear it just below your bust. This will create curves and minimize your waist.

Wear clothes that draw attention away from your mid-section and waist. V-neck empire waist dresses and tops, wrap dresses and A-line dresses will do wonders for you. Choose tops that cover the entire belly area and extend just below your hips.

Avoid double-breasted jackets, bulky tops, and clingy silhouettes. Go for layered tops, ruched tops, and tunics.

Avoid skinny jeans and straight leg pants if you are top heavy. Flared or boot cut pants with back pockets are the right choice for you.

A pear-shaped body

With this body shape, your waist is wider than your bust, you have full hips, a narrower shoulder when compared to your hips and you have the fuller rear. Here is how to dress this body type:

Wear dark, solid colors for your bottom half and lighter, brightly colored tops.

Avoid tight pants, capri-pants, short skirts, and pencil skirts. Choose tailored, flared pants and A-line skirts instead.

Choose patterned and embellished tops and dresses. Make your shoulders look broader with a bateau neckline, cap and puff sleeves.

Highlight your shoulders to balance the shape of your figure. For this, you can use scarves, pashminas and colorful necklaces.

 A rectangular body shape

Here, your shoulders and hip measurements are nearly the same, you are not curvy, your waist isn’t well-defined, but rather straight up and down and your weight is evenly distributed throughout your body. Here is how to dress for it:

Choose underwear that provides good breast support and makes your waist more defined.

Wear tops that end at the mid-section of the hips. Enhance your shoulders and bust line with ruffled or pleated tops and choose accessories that add volume to your upper part.

If you don’t have natural curves, you can use clothes and accessories to create them. Wear a belt at the narrowest part of your waist to accentuate it. Choose empire-waist and wrap dresses.

An hourglass body shape

This body shape can be described as curvy with a well-defined waist, roughly even bust and hip measurements and fuller bust, hips, and thighs. Below are tips on how to dress this body shape:

Avoid baggy clothing. Remember that drawing focus to your narrow waist is the best way to highlight your hips and bust.

Wear undergarments that fit correctly. If your bust is large, be sure to use the right kind of bra. Avoid using padded cups or unstructured bras that make your cleavage look droopy.

Highlight your curves. For this, it’s essential to choose clothes that draw attention to your waist.

Go for V-neck tops and dresses, pencil skirts, and shirts that accentuate your breasts.

In conclusion, everybody is different. If maybe you find out that you’re not one of these shapes, that’s okay! These dressing guidelines are best used as a starting point to understand the basics. In fact, most women are a combination of these shapes. It’s all about mixing and matching until you find what works for you.

Remember that whatever you wear, it’s essential that the clothes focus on your advantages. This way, you’ll feel more confident and appear more attractive in the eyes of others.
