Research has shown that many people are exposed to porn from an early age. The average age for first time exposure to porn is around 11 years old! With most of these first-time cases occurring at home, in our children’s rooms. For most people, it starts on their television sets.

The first exposure children get is from nearly nude ladies in adverts and TV shows. When a kid sees these explicit pictures on the TV they become more and more curious about their sexuality. It is only a matter of time that, due to negative peer pressure and absence of parents to guide them, they finally fall prey to the world of immorality through porn.

Starting out mildly and they soon find themselves hooked to the vice and even practicing masturbation. Statistics have shown that men are the ones more likely to continue watching porn even when married. In a survey carried out by the Pew Internet & American Life Project, it was found that 26% of male Internet users visited adult websites while only a measly 3% of women visited these sites. The porn industry has therefore raked billions of dollars (for instance, it raked nearly 13 billion dollars in 2006)

Men and Pornography

According to a San Francisco sex therapist Lonnie Barbach. Ph.D., “Some women feel threatened because they don’t think they’re as sexy as a porn star. But it’s not about what he’s not getting at home. It’s the novelty. It’s a turn-on.” However, the question still remains:

Why Do Men Love to Watch Pornography?

Why would a guy still be interested in porn even past his teens?

Is it that they don’t like real sex?

Well, here are five excuses men have given as explanations as to why they are into porn.

pornnMen think porn is safer than sex with strangers

Casual hookups can turn out to be very complicated. One can hurt feelings of their partner, contract STDs, and of course the awkward morning after conversation. So to cover up for the fear of the aforementioned complications, some men seek solace in the naked ladies and couples on the internet.

They make masturbation and porn an alternative to casual sex with strangers. No risk of rejection or performance anxiety. Hence porn is associated with low self-esteem and depression.

Men are aroused by visual stimulation

Unlike ladies, who can take some few minutes to get turned on, men get turned on by just any visual stimulation. That is why they like watching. That is why some ladies dress provocatively to catch the attention of a man.

Porn allows men to live vicariously

Many men like being imaginative when it comes to sex. They would like sex to not only be a casual activity but one of adventure and fun. Sex on a beach in the middle of the winter? Sure! Sex on the boss’ desk, with no risk of being fired? Why not! Irrespective of the scenario, some men are thrilled by the adventure.

Porn allows men to be selfish

Men say they want to be happy. A healthy sex life makes them happy. When watching porn, unlike real sex, men do not have to keep reading their partners body language, to avoid peaking too early or holding off. Porn makes them feel they are totally in control of the situation they just have to concentrate on their own pleasure.

Well, whatever reasons men give for watching porn they need to ask themselves is it worth it? What are the effects of watching porn? Here are some of the negative effects of watching porn:

Porn contributes to psychological and social problems within men. Findings have proven that porn is the leading cause of controlling, excessive introversion, high anxiety, narcissistic tendencies, curiosity, low self-esteem, and depression in men.

Porn causes men to objectify women. Porn causes men to view women as sexual objects rather than perfect beings created in the image of God to be man’s companion and helper: to be in loving relationship.

Porn turns sex into masturbation. Porn has taught men to be self-loving and that sex is not the traditional mutual reciprocating intimacy that it was meant for.

menPorn can cause sexual dysfunction. It has been proven that porn users usually have a difficulty getting and maintaining an erection, they need the graphic content to help ejaculate and orgasm.

Porn affects your everyday mood. Many porn addicts find themselves highly irritable, angry and depressed at all times. It is evident that porn is not just a “harmless” pastime. It has serious psychological, social and physical impacts.

Luckily, one can easily recover from the addiction to porn and relearn a healthy sexual lifestyle. You just have to become aware of the effects of porn and be willing to work at overcoming it.
