We as people walk around every day thinking about what it would be like to be beautiful and free of all of our imperfections. We think that maybe, just maybe by some chance if our lips were bigger, our arms and legs were smaller or having an hour glass figure that we could be beautiful. What people do not know is that they are wrong. Our looks do not define us, it is our insides and personalities that define who we are. People go out and have surgeries done in hopes of looking better but a lot of these operations are botched and fail and if they do not fail, a lot of these surgeries lead to medical issues in the future. Both women and men get surgery so that they can compete with other people to see who looks better, but that is not at all what beauty is about. We as people need to put a stop to this crazy idea of external beauty.
Young children grow into adults thinking that in order to be perfect you have to have your face made up and a curvy body. They watch television shows about their favorite celebrities to whom they look at as gods and goddesses and think that the only way for them to be beautiful is to look like them. The only way that we could physically look like them is through plastic surgery and we take our chances and get it, risking our own health in the process.
We all have our eyes set on different people as role models that are either good, bad or both kinds of role models because we have heard a lot about them on television or social media. We look at and listen to them so that we can copy them in hopes of being beautiful.
Today, I am going to talk to you about Chantelle Young Brown, Shaun Ross and Ashley Graham. These three unique models that are very inspirational people that prove that beauty is not what is on the outside, but rather what is on the inside.
Say hello to Chantelle Brown Young, better known as Winnie Harlow. Chantelle is a twenty-one year old Canadian model, spokesperson and activist. She is not your average model as she was diagnosed with Vitilgo, a chronic skin condition that deals with the depigmentation of the skin, at the age of four.
“I loved myself, and with that, opportunities started to fall into my lap and I thanked God for all of them. Try loving yourself.”~Chantelle Winnie
She was a victim of bullying all throughout school being called names like ‘cow’ and ‘zebra’ which led to her constantly switching schools and eventually dropping out of high school because of her depression and suicidal thoughts. She blew minds when she decided to go on America’s Next Top Model’s 21st cycle in which she started landing modeling gigs with Desigual and SHOWtime. Desigual picked up Chantelle when they told her that they had a new line with polka dots and she accepted it because of the fact that some of her skin patterns were dots. In 2015, she won the Beauty Idol award and the Role Model award. She has proved her point to many people. She wants everybody to know that just because you are different doesn’t mean that you are not beautiful. Everyone is beautiful in their own way.
This handsome young man is Shaun Ross. He is a professional fashion model, amateur actor and dancer. Shaun is not your ordinary model. He is known as the first professional male albino model. His birth name was Nissan and he comes from African American descent. He was born in The Bronx New York City, New York.
“To be able to travel is the gift to see something new… Be thankful, some people don’t get the chance to see around the corner.” ~Shaun Ross
He had a hard time growing up as he faced discrimination head on for being albino. In school, he was bullied by classmates and was called names such as ‘Powder’, ‘White-Out’ and ‘Casper’. Shaun was discovered on YouTube after five years of training for dance at the Alvin Ailey School. He then moved to the fashion industry at 16 years old. He was first signed by AMCK Models London. He has made appearances on the Tyra Banks Show and in music videos like ‘E.T.’ by Katy Perry, ‘Party’ and ‘Pretty Hurts’ by Beyonce, ‘Dark Again’ by Gold Fields and ‘Coma’ by Issues. He is now the face of Lynx men’s grooming products. Shaun proved to people that just because you look different does not mean that you are ugly.
“It doesn’t matter if you’re a size 2 or 22, you can be healthy as long as you’re taking care of your body, working out, and telling yourself I Love you Instead of taking in the negativity of beauty standards.” ~Ashley Graham
This is the gorgeous Ashley Graham. She is a lingerie model from Nebraska. She is a very special type of model. She turned heads when she became a model because she is a very well known plus size model. Kids used to tease her because she is bigger but were dumbfounded when she became a model. She proves that you do not have to be skinny to be a model or to be beautiful. She is a beautiful curvy woman and is not afraid to show it.
These three people love the skin that they are in. They have all been bullied in the past about how they looked and are now models. They are different and do not wish to look like anyone else because they are special in their own ways. We need to start teaching everyone to be themselves because that is all that matters. Everyone should love themselves because everyone is beautiful.
